How to cast

  1. Find three coins of the same denomination. Hold them in cupped hands.
  2. Bring a question to mind — clear, open-ended. Not yes/no.
  3. Toss the coins. Count the number of heads (0–3).
  4. Log the count below. Repeat for a total of six tosses.
  5. Your hexagram will appear once all six lines are cast (bottom → top).

The oracle is a mirror, not a fortune teller. Sit with what it reflects.

About the coin method

The three-coin method assigns each toss a value: heads = 3, tails = 2. The sum of three coins is 6, 7, 8 or 9 — determining the line's nature.

  • 6 (0 heads) — old yin, a broken changing line
  • 7 (1 head) — young yang, a stable solid line
  • 8 (2 heads) — young yin, a stable broken line
  • 9 (3 heads) — old yang, a solid changing line

Lines are cast from the bottom up. Changing lines transform into their opposite to form a second hexagram — read together, they describe a movement.
